What the Faculty Associate actually does

Domain 1

Affiliate liaison and motivation

You are the human layer between UMM and its 100+ affiliates in your faculty. Keep them active, informed, and sharing. Host a brief monthly affiliate briefing. Escalate issues to UMM admin.

Domain 2

Media and campus visibility

Secure UMM features on TUKS FM. Organise visibility at faculty events, orientation days, and academic support fairs. You open the media doors that remote marketing cannot reach.

Domain 3

Society partnerships and sponsorships

Approach and activate partnership arrangements with student societies in your faculty — Chess Society, Actuarial Society, Engineering Student Council. Each confirmed partnership earns you R500.

Domain 4

Institutional liaison

Build relationships with UP faculty offices, the SRC, and administrative stakeholders as appropriate. You are the face of UMM at UP. All institutional communications are professional and coordinated with UMM.

You are probably right for this role if...

  • You are in your 3rd or 4th year at UP in a STEM-related degree
  • You are on a society committee or involved in student leadership
  • You are the person people call when they need to connect with someone
  • You understand what it feels like to sit in WTW 114 or STK 110 and feel lost
  • You are comfortable speaking to a TUKS FM producer and a faculty administrator in the same week
  • You want something that builds your professional profile, not just your bank balance

This role is not for you if you are in your first or second year, you are looking for passive income only, or you expect to represent UMM without experiencing our sessions. Faculty Associates attend at least one UMM session per month as observers.

Appointment timing: All three positions are open for applications now. The NAS Faculty Associate will be appointed first (Semester 1 revenue base). EMS and EBiT appointments follow as revenue supports the cost. Applying now builds your pipeline position regardless of timing.

Faculty Associate questions answered

The NAS Faculty Associate will be appointed first — concurrent with Semester 1 revenue generation, targeting mid-April 2026. EMS and EBiT appointments follow as revenue supports the cost. Applying now builds your pipeline position. All applicants in the pipeline are kept informed of timing — you will not be left wondering.
Yes. Register your interest now and we will keep your application in the pipeline for Semester 2 2026 or Semester 1 2027 depending on your year progression. The role specifically targets 3rd and 4th year students, but exceptional 2nd year candidates with strong campus leadership will be considered for future appointments.
Yes. All applications are retained. A candidate who applies in March 2026 and is not appointed for Semester 1 is the first person we contact when the EMS or EBiT position opens. You do not need to re-apply.
Approximately 8–12 hours per week for an active month — covering society meetings, affiliate check-ins, one campus activation, and the monthly report. Some weeks are lighter, particularly outside of test and event periods. The R6,000 base retainer reflects a part-time professional commitment, not a passive one.
Yes. Faculty Associates earn R300 per student referral on exactly the same terms as any affiliate. Your referral commissions are tracked through GoAffPro and paid monthly alongside your base retainer. Many Faculty Associate candidates will be among the highest-earning affiliates precisely because of their campus network.
UMM does not require you to disclose the role to UP — you are an independent contractor, not a UP employee. However, if you hold any UP role (SRC, tutorial post, society committee position) that has conflict of interest provisions, you should review those terms yourself. UMM does not operate in a way that creates formal conflict with UP student roles, but you are responsible for your own compliance with any existing commitments.
Directly to the UMM founder. The Faculty Associate role is a founder-level relationship — not a middle-management structure. Monthly reports go directly to the founder. Issues are escalated directly. You are UMM's representative on campus; that relationship is managed at the top.

One WhatsApp message. 30-minute conversation if you are right.

Tell us your name, year of study, faculty (NAS/EMS/EBiT), one example of something you have organised on campus, and any society roles you hold. No formal CV at this stage.
